Alicia Gimeno · Instituto Cervantes Tokyo · October 2026

Some exhibitions take place in a space. Others mark the beginning of a new chapter.

On October 7, I had the privilege of opening Architecture of the Gesture, my solo exhibition at Instituto Cervantes Tokyo.

Presenting my work in Japan has been particularly meaningful. My practice is rooted in an exploration of movement, matter and nature, and this exhibition has allowed me to create a dialogue with a tradition that has accompanied my work for years: Catalan Modernism and its fascination with transforming the organic forms of nature into art and architecture.

In my paintings, gesture becomes structure. A line can suggest a branch, a root, movement or architecture. Nature is not represented literally; instead, it becomes an abstract language transformed through matter, movement and gesture.

Tokyo has also been an extraordinary human experience. Seeing the works installed at Instituto Cervantes, sharing them with the audience and meeting people from different backgrounds around the exhibition has made this much more than a presentation of my work. It has become a meeting between cultures through art.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the team at Instituto Cervantes Tokyo — Miwa, Víctor, Daniel, Cristian and Javier — for their trust, generosity and support throughout this project, and to everyone who joined us for the opening.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who has followed my work from Spain and from around the world. Bringing my work to Tokyo has been an important step in the international journey I am building as an artist.

Tokyo feels like the beginning of a new chapter.
